Second Growth began with perfectly good handmade forest soap that was ready for a new life. Instead of letting it go to waste, we chopped the cured bars into pieces and incorporated them into a fresh batch of soap, creating a bar made from roughly equal parts old & new. The name comes from a second-growth forest, the new forest that emerges after the original growth has been removed. It felt particularly fitting for a soap where the old isn’t discarded. It becomes part of what grows next. Every cut reveals a different landscape of old and new soap, making each bar completely its own.
Scent
Redwood • Damp Moss • Fresh Greens • Earthy Woods • Forest Floor
Deep redwood and earthy woods mingle with damp moss, fresh green notes and the grounding character of the forest floor. Fresh, green & woodsy with the feeling of walking beneath towering trees after rain. Because pieces of the original forest soap run throughout each bar, subtle variations in fragrance may appear from one bar to another.
Soap Formula: Recrafted + No-Waste
The fresh portion of Second Growth begins with a balanced cold-process formula made with our hand-rendered suet tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter & castor oil. Tallow and olive oil form the heart of the recipe, coconut oil contributes effective cleansing and lather, shea butter brings richness to the formula, and castor oil helps support the lather. Then we fold in generous pieces of previously cured handmade forest soap, giving perfectly good soap a second life instead of sending it to waste.
Made From Scratch… Twice
Thistle + Ember soaps aren’t made from a premade soap base. Each batch begins with oils and fats formulated from scratch using the traditional cold-process soapmaking method. Through saponification, those ingredients become real soap before each batch is poured, designed, cut by hand & allowed to cure. With Second Growth, some of that handmade soap gets to make the journey twice.

Second Growth takes handmade variation to another level. Every cut reveals a different arrangement of reclaimed soap, so no two bars will have exactly the same pattern, colors or distribution. Shape, weight and subtle scent characteristics may vary as well. That’s not something we’re trying to hide. It’s the entire point.
No-Waste by Design
We put a lot of time, materials & energy into making soap from scratch. Perfectly good handmade soap doesn’t belong in the trash simply because it isn’t going to be sold in its original form. Second Growth gives those pieces another purpose and turns them into something useful, beautiful & genuinely one of a kind.

Soap Care
Keep your bar on a well-draining soap dish and allow it to dry between uses for the longest life.

Handmade in a shared workspace that uses coconut, goat milk, honey, oats, nuts/tree-nut-derived ingredients, botanicals, seeds, salts & clays. If you have significant ingredient allergies or sensitivities, we recommend choosing one of our individually formulated soaps with a specific ingredient declaration instead. External use only.
